Tennis Rules

  1. Each lake will field a team consisting of 3 men and 3 women. The minimum age of players shall be 14 years as of June 1st of the current season.
  2. Each team shall consist of one men's doubles, one women's doubles, and one mixed doubles. Winners are to be determined by one set. No player may participate in more than 1 match against the same lake.
  3. Players are requested to wear tennis attire and appropriate shoes.
  4. Scheduled team matches shall begin promptly at 8:30am, so all players must arrive prior to warm up at be ready to start play at 8:30. Games will continue to flow one after the next until all games are completed. A team will forfeit if players aren’t ready to play within 5 minutes of start time.
  5. Captains must supply the complete team line-up to the chairperson before any play is started.
  6. Each team shall supply 1 can of tennis balls. The official ball, Penn, will be purchased from the HUB lakes League.
  7. Matches shall be played at WML courts at the A-field, on Montauk Ave on the date(s) provided.
  8. Once play has begun, it shall be continuous until the end of the set. This means that there will be no rest periods and each set will immediately follow the previous one. Prior to the start of each set, a warm-up, not exceeding 10 minutes may take place or a quick bathroom break for players that have back to back sets.
  9. In the event that any set reaches six-all, a standard 7 point tie break will be employed.
  10. Both teams are responsible for reporting the results of the match to the HUB Lakes Tennis Chairperson table in front of the courts immediately following the set.
  11. The lake standings are to be determined on a point system where each individual set won counts as 1 point. Any un-played matches, will count as a forfeit.
  12. In the event of a tie for a place, the team that won the match between the 2 tied teams will be the overall winner. The hubs tennis chairperson will maintain the match records and determine the place of finish of each participating lake. The next criteria will be total points scored for and the last criteria will be points scored against, if needed.
  13. Unless stated otherwise above, all USTA rules apply.
  14. Since scheduling and notifying individual players requires time, the coaches are required to be in contact with their own teams and relay any needed info to the hubs chairperson.
  15. It is recommended that the chairperson call a meeting of the coaches 1 month prior to the start of the new season to review the rules. It is also recommended that the chairperson be rotated among the participating lakes each year.
  16. Tennis Regulations for the Tie Break: The tie-break will operate when the score reaches 6 games in any set in accordance with Rule 27. First team to win 7 points (winning by 2) shall win the game. The player whose turn it is to serve shall be the server for the first point, the next server the 2nd and 3rd points, etc in rotation and thereafter each player shall serve alternately for 2 consecutive points until the winner of the game and set has been determined. Players shall change ends after every 6 points of the tie-break game.
